Hysteroscopic Surgery

A minimally invasive approach to diagnosing and treating conditions inside the uterine cavity, from abnormal bleeding to polyps and submucosal fibroids.

What is a Hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy is a procedure that allows a surgeon to look directly inside the uterus using a thin, lighted tube called a hysteroscope. It is an invaluable tool for both diagnosing the cause of certain symptoms and simultaneously treating them without the need for external incisions.

Because the instrument is introduced through the cervix, hysteroscopy does not require abdominal incisions. Recovery varies with the procedure performed and the patient’s health.

Common Indications

  • Abnormal Uterine BleedingInvestigating and treating the underlying causes of heavy periods, bleeding between periods, or postmenopausal bleeding.
  • Uterine Polyps & Submucosal FibroidsIdentifying and gently removing benign growths within the uterine cavity that can contribute to bleeding issues or interfere with fertility.
  • Fertility EvaluationAssessing the shape and health of the uterine cavity (such as checking for septums or scar tissue) as part of a comprehensive infertility or recurrent miscarriage evaluation.

The Procedure and Recovery

Depending on the complexity of the concern, hysteroscopy can be performed as a diagnostic check or an operative procedure to remove tissue. It is usually done as a day-care procedure under brief anesthesia, meaning most patients return home the same day.

Many patients return to routine activity relatively soon after a straightforward procedure. Mild cramping or light bleeding can occur, and individual recovery instructions depend on what was treated.
